Some terms you will come across reading the original documents
Porches- more commonly perches which are the same as rods (and sometimes poles); a measure of 16 1/2 feet or 5 1/2 yards.
Poles - see above
Chain- a linear measure of 66 feet, which you will notice is 4 rods or porches/perches. A furlong is 10 chains. Eight of these equals a mile.

Some names:
Edward Digges (1620- 1674/5) was the Governor of Virginia from March 1655 to December 1656.
Samuel Mathews (1620-1660) was the Governor of Virginia from December 1656 until his death in 1660.
William Berkeley (1602-1677) was the Governor of Virginia from 1660(with the restoration of the monarchy) until 1677.
At all times beware that New Kent for most of the Seventeenth Century was substantially larger than during the present day; compromising the land areas of not only New Kent County, but also King and Queen, King William, Hanover, and Caroline counties. The western regions of the two later counties however would have been considered the far frontier at the time. The Stone House district in James City County was also part of this Seventeenth Century "Old New Kent"- however even more confusing the Lanexa area of New Kent was part of James City County.
